FAQ about Cookies

What are cookies?

A cookie is a small data file placed by websites on your hard disk to enable websites to manage the events that take place during your visit and to recognise your computer the next time you visit the website. A cookie is not a program and does not contain viruses.

What types of cookies are there?

There are two general types of cookie: "HTTP" cookies and "flash" cookies. HTTP cookies are typically run by the browser, whereas flash cookies are run by a program. This means that a website can contain both browser cookies and flash cookies. Generally speaking, cookies can be divided into seven categories:

  1. Session cookie: Session cookies established by the website are used to recognise you when you browse the site and to remember whether you are logged in, for instance. Session cookies are automatically deleted when you close your browser.
  2. Session cookie (third party): Session cookies set up by a third-party website/program are used to recognise you when you browse the site and to remember whether you are logged in, for instance. Session cookies established by a third party are automatically deleted when you close your browser.
  3. Persistent cookie: Persistent cookies are established by the website itself. Persistent cookies are saved on the user's device and expire on a given date or after a given time interval.
  4. Persistent cookie (third party): Persistent cookies established by a third-party website to which the website is connected. Persistent cookies are placed on a user's device and expire on a given date or after a given time interval.
  5. Google Analytics: Information about the website's use of cookies from Google Analytics – collection of traffic data (not traceable to an individual) on the website.
  6. JavaScript cookie: JavaScript code and files found on the website which can establish cookies. Each file must be manually checked to see whether it actually establishes cookies.
  7. Flash cookie: Flash movies can store information in "Flash Cookies" which are saved in the user's browser. A manual check of each file is required.

Why does e-Boks use cookies?

The website places cookies on the user's equipment (computer, mobile phone and the like) to optimise communication between the website and the user's browser. Cookies are set up both for visits to the open section of e-Boks (before login) and to the closed section (after login).

What is the benefit of cookies?

First of all, cookies help to make the website more user-friendly and offer convenient functions. Without cookies, visitors would have to do without many functions and fixed settings of user preferences, such as the language or font size you have selected, etc.

Are cookies my digital footprint?

Yes! Cookies that stay on your device after you leave a website contain information about your browsing behaviour. But the only party who can read the cookie is the party that placed the cookie on the device. Therefore, your "digital footprint", i.e. the cookie, helps to recognise you and provide the service you are expecting.

Do cookies contain sensitive personal data?

In e-Boks, we do not store personal data in our cookies.

Can I be warned about cookies before I visit a website?

You can set your browser to either warn you, ask you to accept cookies, automatically accept cookies or reject cookies. It is also possible to limit the acceptance of cookies to include only the services/websites you have visited. All browsers contain functions which enable the selective deletion of cookies. It is not possible to log in to e-Boks if you have set up your browser to reject cookies.

What is a cookie's lifetime?

The lifetime of a cookie varies depending on how the individual websites have set them up. A session cookie will typically disappear as soon as you close your browser window. Other types of cookies can exist for several years.

What is a third-party cookie?

A cookie that is saved by both the website and analysis programs. Statistical data, for instance, is used by the website and is sent to the vendor of the statistics program. These cookies are usually not traceable to individual users. At e-Boks, we use SiteCatalyst (owned by Adobe) as an analysis program.

How are cookies deleted?

If you do not want to keep cookies you can always delete them, and you can still navigate the sections of e-Boks that do not require you to log on.

You cannot access the closed sections of e-Boks without having set up your browser to accept cookies, but you can delete your cookies after each visit, of course.

However, we hope you will not delete them because they help to improve our website and enable us to deliver a continuously improving level of service to e-Boks users.
